House of Cards Season 3 Episode 1 Discussion and Thoughts

At long last, House of Cards season three is here and I'm watching it. This is the place where I'll throw random thoughts I have throughout the episodes. I may not do one of these for every single episode, but I'll be sure to cover all my thoughts.
Make sure not to read this until you've actually seen the episode, because, you know, spoilers.
  • Is the episode going to end with Francis pushing Claire in front of a train?
    • The trailers seemed to show there would be some tension between them
  • Pissing on his father's grave, brutal
    • It'd be hilarious if a photographer caught him, that wouldn't help his approval ratings
    • That scene seemed really green screen-ed to me
  • Doug is alive
    • Honestly did not expect that. He just looked so dead.
  • Doug uses a Windows Phone, and it's getting a lot of direct screen time. I wonder how much money Microsoft payed for that. That's not just me bitching, it's a genuine query.
  • Where is Rachel?
    • Is that going to be a season long mystery?
  • America Works
    • Some big "New Deal" level stuff going on here.
  • Frank on Colbert
    • It wasn't even really funny, just brutal
    • It's hard to picture that actually happening on Colbert's show, he seems too nice
    • I wonder if Colbert actually wrote this lines or if they wrote them for him
  • Francis is scary as President
    • That meeting about AmWorks, he's not holding back anymore.
    • He is the exact opposite of Walker. Walker was a push over, Underwood isn't taking any shit from anyone. Not really surprising.
    • He's hiding less his true self, showing people, at least the people in that meeting, how terrifying and driven he really is.
    • Is he going to force this Supreme Court judge to work instead of spending time with his family?
  • Shit Doug fixing his arm, ew
  • Seeing Doug and Francis in the Oval Office is sweet, and slightly terrifying.
    • They're both a bit crazy.
  • Setting up Claire for future political office, that's interesting, also not terribly surprising, their marriage has always been calculated, with weird bi-curious sex.
    • They're long term plan is probably to be an incredibly powerful family just forever
    • I'd be really interested in learning more about how Francis and Claire came to be together.
  • They're really pushing the "Francis wants to establish a legacy" thing. There was the thing with his father, "he was a nobody," and he straight up tells Claire that he won't be a placeholder President.
  • And Doug is going to become a druggie
    • With prostitutes it seems.
  • Is he planning on drugging this prostitute?
    • And we have our first breasts of the season. That didn't take long.
    • I bet this sex gets weird.
    • "Don't be gentle."
    • I was right.
    • "It's just bourbon"
    • "Just squirt it into my mouth"
    • I was really right
  • Maybe Doug will not be alive for very long, he doesn't seem to be handling everything to well.
  • Does Francis actually care if he's killing children with this drone strike thing, or is he only worried about publicity? I would lean toward publicity, but the music makes the scene feel human.
    • But then he just says "thank you" and leaves, so.
  • Seems like this season might focus a lot on blowback, Doug living in a lot of pain, having weird, kinky sex, the public disliking Frank. It seem unlikely Frank will accept being unpopular and unproductive for long, but maybe this will be the season where things finally go bad for him.
  • Not enough Cashew this episode. Or maybe just enough.
  • So no big bombshell moments like Zoe's death in this premiere. That'll keep us on our toes, I'm sure it's coming, at least one.
  • Doug is definitely going to be a bit of a loose marble this season, could he potentially turn against Francis? That would screw a lot of shit up for Frank.
  • A pretty good first episode, no totally amazing "suck you in I gotta watch more" stuff, but definitely set a lot of things up, and I can't wait to watch more.
  • House of Cards is back!
