1. Islamist Candidate Declared Winner Of Egyptian Election
Egyptian election officials declared Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi the country's first freely elected president on Sunday. Morsi won 51.7% of the vote in a runoff election against former regime loyalist Ahmed Shafiq. Morsi sought to reassure the international community in his victory speech, pledging to "preserve international agreements and commitments," protect the rights of minorities, and establish "a modern democratic and constitutional government."

2. Dozens Of Syrian Soldiers Defect
Turkish officials announced on Monday morning that 33 Syrian soldiers had crossed the border and defected on Sunday night. The defections come during a time of increased tensions between the neighbors. Just a few days ago, Syria shot down a Turkish military aircraft it said had violated its airspace.

3. Saudi Arabia To Allow Women To Compete In Olympics
Buckling in the face of international pressure, Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that it will allow female athletes to compete in the upcoming Olympics for the first time in history, provided that they dress to "preserve their dignity." It is likely that competitors will be required to wear loose-fitting garments and a "sports hijab" which covers the hair, but not the face.
