Opinion: On Planned Parenthood, Abortions, and the Catholic Church

Today after church, a woman took five minutes to explain about a new anti-Planned Parenthood organization she was heading up. She explained how they were going to take out ads in the newspaper against Planned Parenthood and have people outside the new, bigger Planned Parenthood building in my town (which is now offering abortions), at all times (at least when they're opened.) They're not going to do anything, not talk to anyone, just be there and pray.
She also rattled off some stats about the 13 million babies who have been killed before they were given a chance to breath. I think she said that was since 9/11, which she also managed to work into the speech. She also mentioned Planned Parenthood's $1,000,000,000 profit (I assume this is annually) and the $1,000,000 they get from taxpayers every month. (I'm not going to take the time to investigate these figures, but I assume they are accurate. I know Planned Parenthood does get money from the federal government.)
When she was finished, 95% of the congregation gave her a standing ovation (followed by the priest's humorous comment, "no clapping in Church.")

While I agree with all those standing folk and the speech-giver herself on the issue of abortion, that it is ethically wrong (at least in most cases), I completely disagree with them on their "mode of attack."

Here's that generic unborn child image you see all over
 the place.
Abortions, in my opinion, are wrong in almost all cases. The only cases where it would be acceptable in my opinion is if the mother would die, or come close to death, during child birth. Then the family has to choose between the mother's life and the unborn child's. If the family picks the mother's life, they should have the right to that.
That being said, I don't think abortions should be illegal, at least before a certain point in the child's pre-birth development. It's similar to the way I don't want to spend my time drinking beer and getting high. I don't want to do that personally, and it seems like a stupid decision, but if you want to do that, you should be able to.

The speech giving lady said she wanted to show Planned Parenthood that they "aren't welcome in our beautiful city."
First of all, if they're spending the money on a huge new building, and offering abortions, they must be welcomed by enough people to make a profit off these new additions. After all, they are a business in the business of making money. Even speech lady pointed that out.
Second, I welcome any business into our city. Especially a big one. Big businesses bring in tax money for the local government, so maybe they can finally fix up the 50% of roads around here that are suckish.
While I would prefer the money for the streets not come from something I don't ethically agree with, Planned Parenthood does do other things besides abortions. They were here for a while before they expanded and began offering abortions.

I also think this lady's mode of attack is completely wrong. Don't go attacking this company, whose goal isn't to kill unborn children, but to make money. I'm sure the CEO doesn't wake up every morning and say "I can't wait to kill innocent children!" and then laugh to him or herself. They probably wake up and say "How can I make a lot of money today?" The answer happens to be by performing abortions (as well as other medical procedures that they offer).
Here's Planned Parenthood's logo. No it's not necessary, but
it breaks up the text and makes the page look prettier.
And guess what? Abortions aren't illegal. So they can run their companies and perform all the abortions they want and not, technically, be doing anything wrong. They're not braking any legal code of ethics.
Here in the land of the free, it is legal to make money by unethical means (to a certain point, at least). Deal with it.
So taking out ads against Planned Parenthood is completely the wrong way to do this.

Speech lady and I agree on a couple of points. Abortion is wrong. We should try and stop it.
We differ because she believes abortions should be illegal, and we should destroy Planned Parenthood.
It seems to me that instead of spending money on ads against Planned Parenthood, where I'm sure Planned Parenthood could easily spend some money and buy twice as many pro-PP ads, we should run an ad campaign educating people about abortions, how violent they can be, and how surprisingly developed the child you are killing is.
It seems like this would educate people rather quickly, and scare them away from getting an abortion.
Plus, there's no need to tear down Planned Parenthood, which does offer many ethical services which are helpful to many.

I'll compare this entire incident to the chick-fil-a incident of late. I disagree with chick-fil-a's anti-gay marriage position, but I don't want to destroy the company. And if I were going to start a pro-gay marriage ad campaign, I wouldn't make the ads anti chick-fil-a, I would make them pro-gay marriage. I would compare the hatred of gay marriage to the hatred of inner-racial marriage of not too long ago. I would point out we live in a free country. I wouldn't ridicule and put down chick-fil-a.

In the same way, to stop abortions from happening, we shouldn't try and stop PP, who has much more money than speech lady and her friends, we should point out why its wrong.

Educating students about drugs and sex has certainly brought down the number overdosed high schoolers and teen pregnancies, and it seems that the same method should work again on abortions.

So as the church stood applauding this lady, I was torn. Should I stand because I agree with her that abortion is wrong, or sit because her mode of attack is wrong?
I decided to sit, then stand after fifteen seconds.
It seemed like the best of both worlds.

(By the way, if you see any anti-Planned Parenthood ads on this site, let me know. I don't deal directly with each ad on the site, so it's possible one could get onto the page without my knowledge. However, I can block any ad, and I would certainly be willing to block any ad I don't like.)
