This weekend, I finally got to watch the Truman Show, the 1998 comedy/drama/mystery movie with Jim Carrey. I'd always heard it was good, but had never gotten the chance to see it.
Plot.
The movie follows Truman Burbank. He's the star of The Truman Show. The show is broadcast live to the entire world, 24/7, 365 days a year. The show is commercial free, funded completely by in show product placements. The show began with Truman's birth, and has been on air for over 30 straight years, with no breaks. The show is one of the most popular things on TV.
But Truman doesn't know any of that. He doesn't even know he's on TV. Everyone in his life is an actor, and he lives inside a giant dome, so the shows producers can control everything from the weather to his love life. Truman just thinks he's a normal guy living a normal life.
The movie follows Truman as he slowly begins to suspect that something is up with his life.
Review.
This movie may sound a little stupid, but it is really amazing. It starts out funny, then slowly gets more serious, and epic.
The funny parts are pretty funny, and it is pure original comedy. Almsot all the jokes are based off the fact that we know its a show and he doesn't, and there are no other movies that can use that as a basis for a joke.
Not only is it funny, but the plot is great, and the way the mystery is unvalued, the way he slowly discovers his life is fake, is amazing. It's really fascinating to think about the whole idea. And the climax of the movie is both incredibly epic and emotional.
The entire movie will make you laugh, cry, and cheer. I know that sounds like a lame marketing campaign, but it's true.
The Bottomline.
A great movie, with a good mix of comedy and epicness.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, you really need to. Plus, there is absolutely NO good movies in theaters right now, so now is a great opportunity to watch it.
If you have Netflix, you can get it on DVD, or stream it on Amazon or iTunes or Xbox or PlayStation.
4.5/5 Stars
