Google has a car that can drive itself around without the need for anyone to touch a steering wheel.

They're been driving it all around for a couple of months now, and so far it has never crashed.
(Actually, the car did scrap a wall once, but there was a person controlling it then.)

Some cool tidbits and interesting facts:
  • A self-driving car could mean you could save a lot of gas money. The car can perfectly step on the brakes when needed, and can plan many steps in advance in order to use gas efficiently.
  • A self-driving car could mean never having to stop for a red light again. The technology will be able to plan ahead and avoid stopping, also increasing gas efficiency.
  • Google was issued the first license to test-drive a self-driving car in Nevada, the only state that currently allows it. The license was issued on March 1, 2012.
  • There are now three states have laws specifically saying driverless cars are legal. Florida, Nevada, and California.
  • Google’s driverless cars have now logged more hours without accidents than the average U.S. driver.

The New York Times released this diagram explaining how the car works.

And Google released this video:
Here's a close look at the sensor on top of the car. It can see obstacles 200 feet away.
