Movie Review: The Campaign ★★★

The Cold Open.
Will Ferrell is in a lot of good movies. Will Ferrell is in this movie. Zach Galifianakis is in a lot of good movies. Zach Galifianakis is in this movie. Therefore, it should be a good/great/amazing movie. Right? Right?

The Plot.
This movie is basically a political satire.
When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice, as he is an idiot, but, with the help of his new benefactors' support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family's political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.
As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy.

The Review.
Rotten Tomatoes summarizes my opinion well:
Its crude brand of political satire isn't quite as smart or sharp as one might hope in an election year, but The Campaign manages to generate a sufficient number of laughs thanks to its well-matched leads.

It’s not amazingly great and funny, but the good jokes are very good.
Unfortunately, the movie resorts away from these good comedy bits, and often gets into stupid comedy, the kind belonging in (good, but) stupid movies like Step Brothers.

But unlike Step Brothers, the stupid bits of this movie aren’t all that funny.

There are tons of jokes, and hilarious situations and conversations, but only a percentage of them are very good. The ones that are good, are very good, but almost all the rest of them are mediocre to bad.

Also, there are some seemingly random bits in the trailer that are changed or left our in the movie. The seen where Marty shoots Cam with a cross bow is actually a gun in the movie, and there are some other minor changes. They aren't good or bad changes, I just find it a little strange.

The Bottomline.
This movie doesn’t live up to how awesome it could be. It’s an election year, a great time for a political satire. Plus, the two leads are awesome actors and comedians. The good parts are very good, but too often the movie resorts to stupid jokes, that don’t fit in with the good bits at all.
A good story, some good comedy, but quite a bit of not so good. Worth seeing, but not a must see.

6 stars out of 10
