I reviewed The Firm back in January when it was first starting up. Back then, I loved it, and it was amazing. You can ready my words of love for it here.
Now, I am twenty episodes into the series, with only two episodes left. The amount of awesome in the series has decreased from incredible to just some.
The change happened around the sixteenth episode, where the case and the mystery of the first sixteen episodes rap up, the main villain is killed, and the family is reunited.
Doesn't that sound like an end of a season sort of episode?
For the most part, all the loose ends where tied together, but there were enough open elements for the series to continue on.
And now those few remaining elements are turning into sort of weird, random episodes that aren't as cool.
After those weird, random episodes ended after a while, and the show returned with a pretty solid plot, but it lacked what made the first sixteen episodes awesome, a sense of mystery.
The show is now turning our episodes that seem a little random, and out of place, and there isn't much mystery, which is the main reason the first episodes were so awesome.
Also, they took away the time jumping element, in which the episodes build up to an epic scene. Pieces of this epic scene were shown in each episode, and then, eventually, the show catches up to the scene and there is an awesome, action packed scene of amazingness, that sets up the next couple of episodes with awesome plots.
These recent episodes also included a lot more family drama, like marriages and possible divorces and stuff. This type of drama can be entertaining, but the show isn't doing a very good job at presenting it, and some scenes seem like they belong in a soap opera.
But, as of right now, I am watching the 21st episode. It still isn't as good as the series was at the beginning, but it is certainly better. There is more action, and less soap-opera-like scenes.
Maybe the show can recover and become awesome again for its finale next week, but seeing as NBC already cancelled it, there isn't much hope for a second season, no matter how awesome it is.
But I do hope it comes back with a goof finale. The show was so amazing originally, it deserves a good send off, not the ok-ness of the last couple of episodes.
