“If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal and if they can't stop you, you become something else entirely... a legend, Mister Wayne.”
In Batman Begins, Batman is born.
In The Dark Knight, Batman falls.
In The Dark Knight Rises, Batman needs to rise once again to save the city helped to fix.
The first two movies in this series are considered by many to be some of the greatest movies of all time, if not THE greatest. I know my cousin feels this way.
I always thought they were very good, but not top 5 material.
But this third and final movie is simply stunning.
The Plot
(The Dark Knight spoilers ahead)
The Dark Knight ends with Batman taking the blame for the crimes of a certain hotshot lawyer, named Dent, so that some pretty bad fellows can be put into jail.
Only Batman and Commissioner Gordon know the truth, that this Dent snapped, and turned into a pretty bad ass half face villain who tried to kill the Commissioner's kid.
So now Batman is an outlaw, and Dent (who is dead) is the towns hero.
(End spoilers.)
Eight years later, Bruce Wayne (who is Batman) rarely leaves his house, walks with a limp, and is pretty sad, seeing as he can no longer go out and be Batman, because everyone thinks Batman is an evil super villain.
Gotham is now in a state of unprecedented peace after The Dent Act. The aforementioned act essentially allowed the police to put criminals behind bars and keep the streets clean.
However, Commissioner Gordon is tormented by the knowledge that the current peace in Gotham is the result of a lie which painted Batman as a villain and Dent as a hero.
The Commissioner walks around with a speech in his pocket that tells the truth about Batman, but is too afraid to read it.
There's now a holiday for Dent, and hundreds of criminals have been locked up because of a new law made in Dent's honor.
So peace has finally come to Gotham City, and Batman is no longer needed, and some say Commissioner Gordon is no longer needed either.
But a new evil arises, named Bane, who is looking to do what the Joker never could, destroy Gotham. It seems as if Batman is needed again to save the city he loves. The same city Bane is mysteriously bent on destroying. (A mystery that is answered later.)
The Review.
The amazingness of this movie is beyond words. As a finale, it is... about as great as a finale can be.
The epicness of this movie is difficult to fathom. I was wondering how they were going to come up with a plot epic enough to be worthy of the Batman finale, but they did a great job. I can't really explain any of it without giving stuff away, but trust me, it's epic.
As with the other Batman films, the creators manage to make an action movie not filled with so much action its stupid. They save the action for when it is necessary, making the action scenes even cooler.
The other Batman movies did a really good job of this, and this one does an even better job.
The film looks a lot more into the mental aspect of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman, as he examines the good and bad that are results of his actions.
Possibly the best part of this movie is how it brings things full circle. The first two movies seemed mostly independent. The only major thing linking them was the characters, not any major plot overlap. But this movie connects strongly with the second movie (The Dark Knight) and even connects back to the first movie (Batman Begins) in some really amazing and surprising ways.
The music (from Hans Zimmer, the amazing man behind the music of so many great movies, including Inception) is amazing, and it makes the final scene so powerful.
Speaking of the ending... man, the ending. The finale scene is so amazing, the way it builds up, and manages to show you where every character is going in life, it was a finale scene worthy of such an amazing film, and series.
Christopher Nolan (the director of this series, and Inception, and Momento, all amazing movies) really pushed the Dark Knight Rises to new limits, and it was almost all good (I talk about the parts that weren't so good below).
One thing that amazed me was that at 2 hours and 45 minutes, it almost seemed like the movie could have been three and a half hours long, if they ad fleshed out some of the characters (catwoman) and the way they interact.
As I review this, I realize that there is almost nothing I dislike about this movie. Does that mean this is the perfect movie? The absolute greatest thing that is possible to create?
I don't think so. I don't think that is possible. But this movie gets pretty close.
Update: Okay, so I thought of one minor thing that could have been better. The confrontations between Bruce and Alfred where kind of brushed over. It wold have been better to show more of how hard it was for Alfred to leave, and how hard it was for Bruce to live on his own.
Another small detail along these lines is that some of the characters seem necessary, but the way they develop seems artificial and stiff, too much like many other movies, mainly Catwoman. She seemed to much like the (minor spoilers) classic petty villain turned good guy. (End spoilers)
The Bottomline
This movie is amazing. Amazing action, but not stupid amounts of it. Some good comedy thrown in, but not so much that it seems dumb. Great plot, with incredible epicness worthy of a finale. All around a great movie.
(Update: I have to lower the grade from a 9.5 to a 8.75 upon further review. The movie was epic, but there were imperfections (here's most of them). It's still an amazing movie, but not a 9.5, nor as good as the Dark Knight.)
