1. Top Syrian General Defects
General Manaf Tlas, a top Syrian officer with close personal ties to President Bashar al-Assad, has deserted the regime and is reported to be heading to Paris via Turkey. If the defection is confirmed, it would be read as a major blow to the embattled Assad, who has been struggling to put down an insurrection for over a year.

2. Argentina Convicts Former Dictators Of Stealing Babies
Argentina's former dictators Rafael Videla and Reynaldo Bigone were convicted of systematically stealing babies from political prisoners while they were in power 30 years ago in an effort to completely eradicate any trace of the armed leftist guerrilla movement they felt threatened the country's future. As many as 500 babies may have been stolen, though only 26 cases were made part of the trial.

3. India Considers Providing Free Drugs At State Hospitals
India is considering a proposal to provide hundreds of essential drugs free of charge to patients in state-run hospitals, officials told reporters on Thursday. The plan, if approved, would cost $5 billion over five years and may be the first step towards a universal healthcare system in the nation. Currently, Indian hospitals require patients to buy even the most basic drugs, such as IV fluids, on their own and such charges make up 70% of all medical costs for Indian citizens.
