President Bashar al Assad of Syria has been accused of Human Rights Watch of running an "archipelago" of 27 torture centers. “The systematic patterns of ill-treatment and torture that Human rights Watch documented clearly point to a state police of torture and ill-treatment and therefore constitute a crime against humanity,” the report concludes.

2. Barclays CEO Resigns
Bob Diamond, the CEO of Barclays, the battered British bank, announced his resignation on Tuesday. The bank was fined $450 million last week for rate-fixing during the global financial crisis, and Diamond is scheduled to testify before Parliament on Wednesday. "The external pressure placed on Barclays has reached a level that risks damaging the franchise -- I cannot let that happen," Diamond said in a statement.

3. This Is What Climate Change Looks Like
So far this summer, the U.S. has been hit with heat waves, wildfires, droughts, floods, and a powerful freak wind storm called a derecho. While they won't say that climate change is the cause of this terrible weather, scientist such as Jonathan Overpeck are comfortable suggesting that "this is what global warming looks like at the regional or personal level." So far this year, the U.S. has set more than 40,000 hot temperature records and less than 6,000 cold temperature records.
