Microsoft has announced they will be hosting an event in Los Angeles Monday, June 18th. Besides that, we have no additional details.
Will it be related to the impending launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT (Windows for tablets)? Will we get details on Windows Phone 8, a platform we're expecting to see previewed at a summit in San Francisco later that same week? Could it be an Xbox event, even though E3 just ended a few days ago? AllThingsD is citing "sources outside the company" as saying that it will indeed be a Windows RT-focused gathering to talk about ARM-based Windows tablets and the software and services that will run on them when they launch later this year, though Microsoft has yet to confirm anything directly.
Rumors have been flying around about what they may be announcing. Buying Twitter? The Xbox 720? Buying a production company (who makes movies)? Many believe it is possible it is some kind of accusation, seeing as the event was announced suddenly and randomly. If it were a product launch, the announcement probably wouldn't seem so sudden.
Another popular theory is that Microsoft will be releasing a Microsoft-branded tablet. Some say the tablet will compete directly with the iPad, while others say it will be a 7-inch tablet, more like the Kindel Fire (A smaller tablet made for watching movies, reading books, and playing lower-0end games).
I do like the fact that Microsoft is pulling an Apple, and making people actually excited for a press conference. Microsoft usually does a terrible job at this, but my not giving any hint about what they are doing, it makes people interested. I mean, I usually have little interest in what Microsoft is doing, unless it is related to the Xbox. The very fact that I sit here typing these words to you mean Microsoft has taken a big step in... being awesome, I guess. Not sure if that's the correct terminology.
I just hope they don't announce some crappy thing, or something that isn't that big of a deal, because it would be so incredibly anti-climactic. Let it be known that the last time it was thought someone (Apple) was going to buy Twitter they ended up announcing a stock dividend instead. So hopefully Microsoft doesn't announce something boring like that.
To summarize, Microsoft has made an announcement, and we really have no idea what its about.
