Daily Update for June 26th

1. Court Upholds Portion Of Arizona Immigration Law
The Supreme Court allowed portions of the controversial Arizona immigration law to stand in a ruling released on Monday. The "show me your papers" clause, which requires that police officers check the immigration status of anyone they "reasonably suspect" of being in the country illegally, was allowed to stand. Several other portions of the bill were struck down on the basis that the federal government has broad powers to implement immigration policy, not individual states.

2. Commercial Fishing Resumes Near Fukushima
The first catch from a half dozen small fishing boats operating in the waters off Fukushima went on sale in Japan on Monday, marking the end of a ban dating back to last year's nuclear disaster. As a precaution, the catch is limited to species thought to trap fewer radioactive particles in their bodies. Contaminated water is still escaping from the plant, and scientists argue that the full effect of the disaster is not yet understood.

3. Phelps, Lochte Qualify For Olympics
Ryan Lochte beat Michael Phelps in the 400 individual medley at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials on Monday night, making the pair the first two swimmers to qualify for the team. Phelps snagged another record as well, becoming the first American male swimmer to qualify for a a fourth Olympics.
