Daily Update for June 21st

1. C.I.A. Funneling Arms To Syrian Opposition
According to American officials and Arab intelligence officers, a small cadre of C.I.A. officers are funneling arms to Syrian opposition fighters from a base across the border in Southern Turkey. The weapons, which are being paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, are being smuggled by a network of intermediaries that includes Syria's Muslim Brotherhood. The officers are in place in part to ensure that the weapons don't fall into the hands of al Qaeda.

2. Egypt Delays Announcing Election Results
Adding yet another layer to the tension and intrigue in Egypt, officials postponed declaring a winner of the disputed election on Wednesday. The runoff election, held last weekend, was largely a referendum between the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood party and entrenched elements of the old regime. Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters along with secular youth revolutionary groups camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest the delay. It is unclear when the winner will be announced.

3. Sanford Police Chief Sacked
Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, who attracted widespread criticism for initially failing to prosecute George Zimmerman for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, was fired on Wednesday. Lee had attempted to resign in April, but his resignation was rejected by city commissioners. "We need to move forward with a police chief that all the citizens of Sanford can support," City Manager Norton Bonaparte said in a statement. "I have come to this decision in light of the escalating divisiveness that has taken hold of the city."
